The Elder Scrolls Online has deployed its most significant quarterly update of 2026, fundamentally reshaping player progression and introducing a new, faction-driven endgame zone. Update 2.82, known as Console Update 49, went live across PlayStation and Xbox platforms, launching the “Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk” narrative arc. The centerpiece is the Night Market, a challenging new event zone in Fargrave where players must align with one of three warring factions vying for control of the interplanar trade hub.
The Night Market: A New Tier of Endgame Challenge
Launching on April 29, the Night Market represents a new class of zone for ESO: the Event Zone. Described as more difficult than standard overland areas, it demands coordination with other players to overcome its enhanced threats. Following the mysterious disappearance of its former ruler, the market has fallen into chaos, with three distinct patrons now fighting for dominance. Players are no longer mere visitors but active participants in this power struggle, pledging allegiance to a faction and completing activities to earn its favor.
Three Factions, Three Philosophies
The conflict is driven by factions with radically different ideologies. The Glittering Goad, led by the patron Tachien, operates as a ruthless meritocracy built on wealth and prestigious auctions, believing success is available to all who can pay the price. In stark contrast, The Ruckus, under Kharakhal Moon-Eye, seeks control through brute strength, offering “protection” to businesses while demanding a cut of all sales from its district, which is now shrouded in darkness. The third faction, the Thousand Eyes, is an ancient collective of the small and overlooked, led by Molto the Whisperer. It gathers power not through force or wealth, but through information and knowledge, using countless subtle actions to blunt the strength of its rivals.
Districts, Activities, and Rewards
The zone is divided into three thematically distinct districts: the wind-swept, bone-littered Parch; the creature-infested Skittering Precinct; and the shadowy, foreboding Sorrow’s Friend. Within these districts, players will face a suite of new activities. These range from battling new boss types like Faceted and Calamitous creatures, to participating in daring races through treacherous streets, solving puzzle-oriented Oddities, and engaging in new public-style Skirmishes with dynamic goals.
For group content, each district is ruled by a Gilded monster in a dedicated 4-player instance. The ultimate test is The Opulent Ordeal, a 12-player trial that serves as the culmination of the zone’s narrative, testing raid-level coordination and skill. Success across these activities earns players Boons—stackable, powerful temporary effects—and Favor with their chosen faction. Favor is the currency used to purchase items from faction vendors, unlocking everything from new furnishings and mementos to unique titles and dyes.
Tamriel Tome: The New Battle Pass System Replaces Endeavors
Perhaps the most sweeping systemic change arrives with the Tamriel Tome, which launched on April 2. This new battle pass-style system completely replaces the previous Endeavors and Daily Login Reward systems. A new Tome will launch with each in-game Season, lasting for its full duration, and offers two tracks of rewards: a Free Track available to all players and a Premium Track offering additional cosmetics and items for permanent account unlock.
Progression and the New Economy
Progression is driven by a Challenge System. Players complete five Weekly Challenges, which can be rerolled, and larger, thematic Seasonal Challenges to earn Tome Points. These points unlock pages of rewards in the Tome. A catch-up mechanic allows up to 12 uncompleted Weekly Challenges to accumulate. Crucially, the system introduces Trade Bars as a new primary gameplay currency, replacing Event Tickets. All existing Event Tickets were automatically converted at a rate of 1 Ticket to 100 Trade Bars. Trade Bars are earned from the Tamriel Tome, in-game events, and Vengeance Campaigns, and are never sold for Crowns.
The Gold Coast Bazaar
To spend Trade Bars, ZeniMax has introduced the Gold Coast Bazaar, a new currency-driven store accessible through the Crown Store interface. Launching on March 25, the Bazaar features mounts, pets, outfits, and gameplay items that were previously available through Golden Pursuits, events, and promotions. It is divided into a Seasonal section with rotating cosmetics that refresh every three months and a permanent Gold Coast Wares section. All purchases are account-bound.
Major Player Experience Overhauls and ESO+ Perks
Update 49 brings a host of long-requested quality-of-life improvements. One of the most significant is making Outfit Slots account-wide, with a new maximum of 10 slots. Previously purchased slots are now cumulative across all characters. Skill and Attribute respecs are now free to perform directly in the UI, subject to a small cooldown. Bag and bank upgrade gold costs have been reduced by 50%, and Crown costs have also been lowered.
Character Progression Streamlined
Character advancement has been accelerated in several key areas. Crafting research is now 50% faster, with the maximum research time reduced from 30 to 10 days. Sixteen mounts that were previously Crown Store exclusives are now available for gold, with existing gold-purchasable mounts reduced to a flat 25,000 gold. Stable training now allows for three upgrades per session. The Vampire and Werewolf skill lines are now discoverable in the world via new shrines, with reduced cure costs.
Enhanced ESO+ Benefits
The subscription service, ESO+, receives substantial new perks tied to the new systems. Subscribers gain a +10% bonus to Tome Points earned from Challenges and receive a monthly Cache of Tome Points plus a Premium Tome Token. Collecting 12 Premium Tome Tokens unlocks a Premium Tome with bonus rewards. Other perks include the Transmute Crystal cap being tripled from 1,000 to 3,000, doubled excavation timers for Antiquities leads, and the inclusion of the Solstice DLC chapters.
Combat Refresh: Dragonknight and Two-Handed Rework
A major focus of the update is a comprehensive refresh of the Dragonknight class and the Two-Handed weapon skill line. Every ability has received updated visual effects, animations, and audio, with passive abilities now featuring immersive flavor text. Crucially, all existing character progression is automatically respected.
Key Dragonknight Changes
The changes aim to refine the class’s identity and effectiveness. In the Ardent Flame line, Dragonknight Standard now buffs allies, providing +300 Weapon and Spell Damage and reducing their damage taken by 10%. Lava Whip has been adjusted to build its Empowered stacks more easily, increasing its damage by 40%. Searing Strike’s duration has been extended to 10 seconds, effectively doubling its damage per cast. Fiery Breath now restores resources over time, and Inferno becomes an 8-meter radius wave attack with no target cap.
The Draconic Power line sees Dragon Leap receive modernized movement and consistent crowd control effects. Spiked Armor also gets a 10-second duration and a 100% damage increase. Dragon Blood now scales with the player’s Max Health, making it more effective on tankier builds. The Earthen Heart line introduces a new support shield ability, Superheated Ward, and reworks Molten Weapons to cause light and heavy attacks to deal bonus Flame Damage.
Two-Handed Adjustments
The Two-Handed skill line receives quality-of-life adjustments to improve flow. Berserker Strike’s duration is increased to 12 seconds, Uppercut’s cast time is reduced to 500ms, and Momentum now lasts for 30 seconds, reducing the need for frequent recasting.
New Item Sets and Endgame Gear
The update introduces powerful new gear tied to the new content. A new antiquity, the Shattered Paths Signet, makes status effect damage scale with the player’s Ultimate. Three new Monster Masks are themed after the Night Market factions: the Thousand Eyes mask introduces a “Shivved” mechanic with damage transfer; the Glittering Goad mask creates a Frost Damage chain on bash and heavy attacks; and The Ruckus mask provides stacking enrage bonuses that grant Major buffs at maximum stacks. A new PvP set, Gorethief, introduces a Bloodthief stacking mechanic consumed by bashes.
PvP Updates and Cyrodiil Improvements
Player-versus-player combat receives several targeted changes. In Cyrodiil, a new Road Speed Bonus grants a movement increase to players traveling on roads while out of combat. Keep courtyards have been expanded to prevent gatehouse exploitation tactics. Campaign queuing now allows for cross-campaign queueing, and leaderboards have been expanded to show 500 entries, with class-specific assignments removed. For Battlegrounds, 3-Sided matches return for Weekend Events, replacing the standard queue during those times, and maps like Huntsman Fortress have received adjustments to spawn points and geometry.
The scale of Update 2.82 demonstrates ZeniMax Online Studios’ commitment to revitalizing ESO’s core gameplay loops. By replacing dated systems like Endeavors with the more engaging Tamriel Tome, introducing a challenging, faction-based event zone, and streamlining years of accumulated friction points, the game positions itself for the next phase of its decade-long lifecycle. The update is less about adding new lands to explore and more about deepening and improving the experience within the existing vast world of Tamriel, ensuring that both new arrivals and veteran adventurers have more compelling reasons to log in every day.
