Elder Scrolls Online Launches Season Zero Night Market Event and Tamriel Tome Battle Pass System

By Central

The Elder Scrolls Online has entered a transformative era with the launch of Update 49 for consoles, introducing foundational systems that reshape player progression and community engagement. This major content drop, version 2.82 on PlayStation and Xbox, marks the beginning of Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk, a multi-phase event introducing the Night Market, a dynamic new event zone, and the Tamriel Tome battle pass system, which permanently replaces the old Endeavors and Daily Login Rewards.

Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk and the Night Market Event Zone

Central to this new season is the Night Market, a sprawling, dangerous trade hub that went live on April 29. This is not a typical safe zone; it is a dynamic event zone with increased difficulty, designed for coordinated group play. Following the mysterious disappearance of its former leader, the Night Market has descended into chaos, with three rival factions vying for control. Players are now invited into this once-restricted area of Fargrave to pledge allegiance and shape its future through their actions.

The Three Factions Vying for Control

Each faction offers a distinct philosophy and aesthetic, compelling players to choose their side carefully. The Glittering Goad, led by the patron Tachien, is a meritocracy built on wealth and prestige, controlling auctions with the belief that success is available to all who can pay. The Ruckus, under Kharakhal Moon-Eye, seeks power through brute strength, offering “protection” to businesses while demanding a cut of all goods. Its district is described as overrun with darkness and grief. The Thousand Eyes, led by Molto the Whisperer, is an ancient faction of the small and overlooked, gathering power through information and collective action.

Activities, Rewards, and the New Player Home

The Night Market is divided into three themed districts—The Parch, Skittering Precinct, and Sorrow’s Friend—each with unique environmental hazards and creatures. Activities range from battling new bosses like Faceted and Calamitous monsters, participating in daring races through treacherous streets, solving Oddity puzzles, and engaging in public Skirmishes. The pinnacle of group content is a new 12-player trial, The Opulent Ordeal, testing coordination and skill.

Rewards are tied directly to faction favor. By completing activities for a chosen patron, players earn Boons (stackable powerful effects) and Favor, a currency used to purchase items from faction vendors. A major unlock is the Night’s Den, a new player home earned via an introductory quest that features a direct entrance to the Night Market. The update adds 61 new achievements, awarding six titles and three unique dyes, along with collectible Mementos, furnishings, and twelve new Dragonknight Skill Styles for class masters.

The Tamriel Tome: A New Battle Pass Progression System

Perhaps the most significant systemic change is the introduction of the Tamriel Tome, which launched on April 2. This new battle pass-style system is designed to reward consistent engagement with ESO’s wide array of content. Each season will feature a new Tome, with a free track offering cosmetics, Seals, and gameplay items, and a premium track providing additional rewards for a one-time permanent account unlock.

Progression and the New Trade Bars Currency

Progression is driven by a Challenge System, featuring five Weekly Challenges that can be rerolled and larger Seasonal Challenges. A catch-up mechanic allows up to 12 Weekly Challenges to accumulate. Completing challenges earns Tome Points to unlock reward pages. The old Event Ticket currency has been entirely replaced by Trade Bars, earned primarily from the Tamriel Tome, In-Game Events, and Vengeance Campaigns. All existing Event Tickets were automatically converted at a rate of 1 Ticket to 100 Trade Bars.

The Gold Coast Bazaar and ESO+ Perks

Trade Bars are spent at the new Gold Coast Bazaar, a gameplay-currency-driven store accessible via the Crown Store UI. It features a rotating seasonal section and a permanent Gold Coast Wares selection, offering mounts, pets, outfits, and items previously found in Golden Pursuits and events. ESO+ members receive significant new perks, including a 10% bonus to Tome Points from challenges, a monthly Cache of Tome Points and Premium Tome Token, a tripled Transmute Crystal cap (up to 3,000), and doubled Antiquities lead timers.

Major Combat and Class Overhauls: Dragonknight Refresh

Update 49 delivers a comprehensive combat refresh for the Dragonknight class and the Two-Handed weapon skill line. Every ability has received enhanced visual effects, animations, and audio, with passive abilities now featuring immersive flavor text. The overhaul is more than cosmetic; it includes substantial balance and functionality changes aimed at improving class identity and viability.

Key Dragonknight Ability Changes

In the Ardent Flame line, Dragonknight Standard now buffs allies, Lava Whip is easier to empower, and Searing Strike’s damage over time has been doubled. The Draconic Power line sees Dragon Leap with modernized movement, Spiked Armor with a longer duration and doubled damage, and Chains of Flame always applying the Burning status effect. The Earthen Heart line introduces a new support shield ability, Superheated Ward, and reworks Magma Armor. A concurrent skill catch-up event is active to help players rapidly rank up these updated abilities.

Expansive Player Experience and Quality of Life Improvements

This update is arguably the largest quality-of-life overhaul in ESO’s history, addressing long-standing community requests. Outfit Slots are now account-wide, with a maximum of 10 slots, and respeccing skills and attributes is now free directly from the UI, subject to a small cooldown. Bag and bank upgrade gold costs have been reduced by 50%, and 16 mounts previously available only for Crowns can now be purchased with gold.

Systemic Upgrades and Accessibility

Other major improvements include crafting research that is now 50% faster, with the maximum research time reduced from 30 to 10 days. The Transmute Crystal cap has been raised to 1,500 (3,000 for ESO+). Treasure Maps now stack up to 200 and are consumed automatically upon opening a chest. The Zone Guide has been enhanced to allow tracking specific location types within the Activity Finder. Numerous UI/UX improvements have been implemented, including better Gamepad UI navigation and accessibility screen narration for the bag upgrade interface.

New Item Sets, Housing, and Content Additions

The update introduces powerful new item sets tied to the new content. New Antiquities like the Shattered Paths Signet make status effect damage scale with Ultimate. Three new Monster Masks are themed after the Night Market factions, such as the Thousand Eyes mask with a Shivved damage-transfer mechanic. A new PvP set, Gorethief, introduces a Bloodthief stacking mechanic.

Housing receives two new homes: the sunny seaside Buccaneer Bay and the upgradable Night’s Den, a former bank vault. Over 55 new furnishings have been added, obtainable from Master Writs, world activities, and Night Market achievements. The Western and Eastern Solstice DLCs are now included for all ESO+ members and have been integrated into the base game for new players.

Base Game Expansion and PvP Adjustments

In a move to lower the barrier to entry, several major DLCs and systems are now permanently included in the base game for all players upon their first login after the update. This includes the Warden class, Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood. This consolidation simplifies the experience for new and returning players.

PvP sees meaningful adjustments as well. Cyrodiil now features a road speed bonus for out-of-combat movement and expanded keep courtyards to prevent exploits. Campaign queuing has been enabled across campaigns, and leaderboards have been expanded. Three-Sided Battlegrounds are returning for weekend events, replacing the standard queue during those times.

The scale of Update 49 reflects a clear vision for the future of The Elder Scrolls Online, one built on more rewarding long-term progression, engaging seasonal events, and a dramatically streamlined user experience. By introducing the Tamriel Tome and the faction-driven Night Market, ZeniMax Online Studios has created new pillars for community interaction and personal achievement. Coupled with the sweeping quality-of-life changes and the impactful Dragonknight refresh, this update doesn’t just add content—it redefines the foundational loop of the game, setting a new standard for how players will engage with Tamriel for seasons to come.
