The landscape of Tamriel shifts once more with the arrival of Update 49 for The Elder Scrolls Online on consoles, a transformative patch that fundamentally redefines player progression, introduces a treacherous new zone, and overhauls core systems. Released as version 2.82 for PlayStation and Xbox platforms, this update marks the beginning of Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk, setting the stage for a year of conflict and commerce in the planes of Oblivion.
A New Battleground in Fargrave: The Night Market
Central to Season Zero is the introduction of the Night Market, a dynamic and dangerous event zone opening on April 29. Following the mysterious disappearance of its former ruler, this once-restricted district of Fargrave has descended into chaos, overrun by malevolent forces and contested by three rival Daedric patrons. Players are now invited to enter this volatile hub of Daedric trade and choose a faction to support, plunging into a zone explicitly designed for increased difficulty that encourages cooperation.
The Factions Vying for Control
The struggle for the Night Market is a three-way war of ideology and power. Players must pledge allegiance to one of the following patrons:
Glittering Goad
Patroned by Tachien, this faction represents a ruthless meritocracy built on wealth. Controlling the auctions and market stands, the Goad believes anyone can succeed—if they can afford the price of entry. Their district, The Parch, is an arid wasteland of dry winds and rattling bones.
The Ruckus
Led by Kharakhal Moon-Eye, The Ruckus seeks control through brute strength and intimidation, offering “protection” in exchange for a cut of all goods. Their district, Sorrow’s Friend, is a dark and foreboding place shrouded in grief and lurking shadows.
Thousand Eyes
The ancient faction of Molto the Whisperer comprises the small and overlooked who gather power through information and collective action. Their district, the Skittering Precinct, is overrun with crawling creatures that nest within the very walls.
Activities, Enemies, and Rewards
The Night Market is far more than a backdrop for faction warfare. It is a dense activity hub featuring new public-style Skirmishes, puzzle-oriented Oddities, and treacherous Daring Races through the district streets. Challenging monsters, categorized as Faceted, Brazen, Argent, and Calamitous, patrol the zones. The ultimate tests are the 4-player instanced bosses that rule each district and the 12-player trial, The Opulent Ordeal.
Supporting a faction by completing activities earns Favor, a currency used to purchase rewards from faction vendors. Dedicated players can earn one of six new titles, such as “Firebrand” or “Priceless,” along with unique dyes, mementos, and furnishings. A significant reward is the Night’s Den, a new player home that provides a direct entrance to the Market, upgradable through continued participation.
The Tamriel Tome: A New Progression System Replaces Endeavors
Perhaps the most sweeping change arriving with Update 49 on April 2 is the complete replacement of the Endeavors system and Daily Login Rewards with the Tamriel Tome, a seasonal battle pass-style progression track. This new system is designed to reward broad engagement with ESO’s content over simple daily logins.
How the Tome Works
Each season, a new Tome launches and remains active for the season’s full duration. Players progress by completing Weekly and Seasonal Challenges, earning Tome Points to unlock pages of rewards. The system includes a catch-up mechanic, allowing up to 12 Weekly Challenges to accumulate if missed. A Free Track offers cosmetics, Seals, and gameplay items, while a separate Premium Track, unlocked permanently for an account, provides additional rewards.
The Gold Coast Bazaar and Trade Bars
Integral to the new economy is the Gold Coast Bazaar, a new store within the Crown Store interface that launches on March 25. All items here are purchased with Trade Bars, a new currency that primarily replaces Event Tickets. Existing Event Tickets were automatically converted at a rate of 1 Ticket to 100 Trade Bars. The Bazaar features a rotating seasonal section and a permanent collection of mounts, pets, and outfits previously tied to events or promotions, all account-bound and non-giftable.
Major Combat Refinements: Dragonknight and Two-Handed Overhaul
Update 49 delivers a comprehensive combat refresh focused on the Dragonknight class and the Two-Handed weapon skill line. These changes go beyond number tweaks, featuring completely updated visual effects, animations, and audio to modernize their feel and impact.
Dragonknight Key Changes
The Ardent Flame, Draconic Power, and Earthen Heart skill lines have all received significant attention. Abilities like Dragonknight Standard now provide a powerful group buff, increasing ally weapon and spell damage while reducing damage taken. Lava Whip and Searing Strike see major damage increases, while Fiery Breath has been reworked to restore resources over time. Defensive tools like Spiked Armor and Dragon Blood have been enhanced for better uptime and scaling.
Two-Handed Adjustments
The Two-Handed line benefits from quality-of-life improvements to key abilities. Berserker Strike and Momentum now have dramatically increased durations, reducing maintenance buff pressure. The cast time for Uppercut has been standardized, making it more responsive in combat rotations.
Substantial Player Experience and Quality of Life Improvements
Beyond the headline features, Update 49 addresses long-standing community requests and streamlines numerous gameplay aspects. Account-wide Outfit Slots represent a major convenience, allowing players to access all purchased slots on any character. The respec process for skills and attributes is now free directly from the UI, albeit with a small cooldown to prevent abuse.
Inventory management sees welcome relief with a 50% gold cost reduction for bag and bank upgrades, and Treasure Maps now stack up to 200. Crafting Research is 50% faster, with the maximum research time reduced from 30 days to 10. Sixteen mounts previously exclusive to the Crown Store are now available for gold, with prices standardized at 25,000 gold.
ESO+ Enhancements
ESO Plus subscribers receive substantial new perks, including a 10% bonus to Tome Point gains, monthly caches of progression resources, and the inclusion of the Solstice DLC chapters. Transmute Crystal caps are tripled to 3,000 for subscribers, and Antiquities lead timers are doubled, with Ultimate leads lasting up to a full year.
New Item Sets and PvP Updates
The update introduces new gear centered on the Night Market factions. Three new Monster Masks—Thousand Eyes, Glittering Goad, and The Ruckus—each offer unique mechanics tied to their faction’s theme, such as damage transfer or stacking enrage buffs. A new PvP set, Gorethief, introduces a bloodthief stacking mechanic. In Cyrodiil, a road speed bonus out of combat aims to improve traversal, and campaign queuing has been made more flexible.
Base Game Expansion and Accessibility
In a significant move for new and returning players, several major DLCs and the Warden class are now permanently added to the base game upon first login after the update. This includes Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood, dramatically expanding the accessible content without additional purchase or subscription.
The scale of Update 49 is monumental, reshaping core progression with the Tamriel Tome, adding a deep, faction-driven endgame zone in the Night Market, and refining combat with a focus on modernizing the Dragonknight experience. It represents a clear shift towards rewarding active play over passive login rewards, while simultaneously lowering barriers to entry for essential content. The stage is set in Fargrave’s shadowy corners, where wealth, strength, and secrets collide, offering veteran adventurers a fresh challenge and a new way to leave their mark on the interplanar stage.
