Marathon Update Fixes Movement Exploit and Contract Bugs on PS5 and PC

Bungie has deployed a significant stability and balance patch for its extraction shooter Marathon, targeting critical movement exploits, mission-blocking bugs, and performance issues on both PlayStation 5 and PC platforms. The Marathon update 1.010, also identified as version 1.0.5.2, directly addresses player feedback from the game’s recent launch period, focusing on refining core gameplay loops and ironing out technical inconsistencies that have impacted the competitive experience.

Combat and Movement Receive Critical Balancing

At the forefront of this update is a crucial fix to player movement mechanics. A specific exploit involving the slide cancel animation has been corrected. Previously, players could deploy equipment or use the Thief’s Grapple Device immediately after a slide cancel to retain an unnatural amount of momentum, bypassing the intended movement cost. This adjustment is a direct response to community reports and is designed to enforce fairer, more predictable combat encounters by ensuring all movement abilities adhere to their balanced resource costs.

Contracts and Objectives Stabilized

The reliability of in-game contracts, which form the backbone of Marathon’s mission structure, has been substantially improved. One particularly frustrating bug that could trap players inside a room during the “Introducing: NuCaloric” contract has been resolved, eliminating a potential soft-lock scenario. Furthermore, the update fixes an issue where disabled contracts were not correctly rerolling for free, ensuring players always have viable objectives. A map display error has also been corrected; objective points for “RUN/HIDE” contracts will now only appear for the relevant Runners, removing an unfair informational advantage.

Major Zone Overhauls: Pinwheel and Outpost

Two of Marathon’s key locations, Pinwheel and the Outpost, have received targeted improvements aimed at enhancing the risk-reward balance and overall flow of matches.

Pinwheel Enhancements

The Pinwheel zone sees several meaningful changes. The entrance to the Destroyed Wing has been reopened, altering navigation and strategic options within the area. Most notably, the overall quality of loot found in loose items and small containers has been improved, making exploration more rewarding. Encounters within Pinwheel have been retuned to better match the value of the rewards on offer, and access to the locked Hub room now requires different security credentials. For added tactical depth, bulletproof glass has been installed in this Hub room, changing the dynamics of fights that occur around this high-value location.

Outpost Adjustments

In the Outpost, Bungie has focused on tightening combat spaces and fixing environmental inconsistencies. The combat area for the Tox Warden has been adjusted to reduce excessive hiding spots, promoting more direct engagement. Tox plants now properly react to player presence, fixing a prior immersion-breaking issue. Additionally, a bug causing the final extraction point to spawn in the same location every match has been fixed, reintroducing necessary uncertainty and variety to the endgame exfiltration phase.

Performance and Stability Fixes

Beyond gameplay tweaks, update 1.010 delivers crucial technical improvements to stabilize the experience. A crash that could occur when opening the Armory menu has been resolved. Players also reported a low framerate issue specifically on Armory tabs containing large numbers of items; this performance hitch has been addressed. In other zones, geometry issues have been patched, such as a fatal fall spot in the Cryo Archive’s Vault 6 and an anomalous waypoint in Dire Marsh that incorrectly appeared below the map.

User Interface and Quality of Life

The update brings a suite of user interface refinements. Keybinding has been made more intuitive, with the ESC key now correctly exiting the keybinding menu instead of closing the entire settings window. An option to clear keybinds has also been added to the settings. For text chat users, a bug causing a temporary loss of control after using an IME (Input Method Editor) keyboard during a run has been fixed. Localization efforts continue, with an issue causing certain Codex entries to appear blank in Chinese now resolved.

Codex and Progression Clarity

Progression tracking within the Codex has been clarified. The order for Ranked Challenges has been corrected so Platinum tier correctly appears before Diamond, aligning with standard ranking structures. Furthermore, the “Requiem for a Cyborg” challenge progression will now properly register for all crew members following a successful Compiler kill, ensuring cooperative play is correctly rewarded.

This comprehensive patch, following closely on the heels of the previous quality-of-life update 1.005, demonstrates Bungie’s ongoing commitment to refining Marathon’s foundation. By directly tackling movement exploits, mission-breaking bugs, and performance pain points, the developers are working to solidify the game’s core loop of high-stakes extraction. The targeted improvements to zones like Pinwheel and Outpost show a data-driven approach to level design, where loot quality and encounter difficulty are being carefully calibrated based on live player behavior and feedback. As the player base continues to explore the evolving arenas of Marathon, these foundational stability updates are essential for ensuring a fair, competitive, and technically smooth experience for all Runners navigating its dangerous landscapes.
