Grinding Gear Games has deployed update 3.28.0 for Path of Exile, introducing the Mirage Challenge League and executing the most significant restructuring of the Atlas endgame system in years. The patch, live as of March 7, 2026, fundamentally changes how players interact with maps, adds a new Ascendancy class for the Scion, and phases out the Awakened Support Gem system in favor of a new tier of power.
The Mirage Challenge League Confronts the Afarud
Players are called to the Maraketh desert to aid Sekhema Varashta against the Afarud, a depraved sect of the Faridun who have allied with the necromancer Saresh. The league mechanic revolves around discovering imprisoned Djinn, defeating their Afarud captors, and then entering an Astral Realm—a Mirage—to shatter the chains binding them. Before entering the Mirage, Varashta offers players a choice of three Wishes that dramatically modify the encounter, influencing monster behavior, loot drops, and special rewards like mysterious coins.
New League Rewards and Structure
The Mirage league features 40 new challenges, with the Orb Regalia Armour Set unlocked at 12, 20, 28, and 36 challenges. A Mirage Totem Pole hideout decoration is awarded from the 19th challenge onward. Hardcore and Solo Self-Found variants are available, with Hardcore characters falling back to the Standard Mirage league upon death. This league marks the permanent integration of the Keepers of the Flame mechanics while simultaneously removing Harbinger as a core league, redistributing key currencies like Fracturing Orbs into the global drop pool.
Scion Gains the Reliquarian Ascendancy
A major character addition arrives with the Reliquarian, a new Ascendancy class exclusive to the Scion. Its defining feature is Notable Passive Skills that borrow powers from specific Unique items found throughout Wraeclast. Crucially, these Notables will change with each challenge league, creating a dynamic and shifting meta for the class. As a result, these powers cannot be obtained via Forbidden Flame or Forbidden Flesh Jewels.
Exceptional Support Gems Replace Awakened Gems
The era of Awakened Support Gems has ended, replaced by a new tier: Exceptional Support Gems. Over 40 of these more powerful gems can now be found in the endgame. To facilitate the creation of powerful, corrupted skill gems, three new currency items have been introduced: the Coin of Knowledge, Coin of Power, and Coin of Skill. Each corrupts a level 20 Skill Gem, imbuing it with a random valid Support effect tied to Intelligence, Strength, or Dexterity, respectively.
Atlas and Mapping System Receives Ground-Up Rework
The most transformative changes in 3.28.0 target the Atlas of Worlds. The goal is to reduce friction while preserving the core mapping experience. The fundamental relationship between map items and specific locations has been severed.
Flexible Map Items and Shaped Regions
Map items are now generic by tier. Instead of finding a “Tier 10 Mesa Map,” players find a “Tier 10 Map.” To run a specific map, players select its location on the Atlas interface and insert the generic map item into the Map Device. The Atlas itself is now the central hub for all endgame content, visually displaying everything available. The Favoured Map system has been removed as a consequence.
A new endgame pursuit involves Eagon using Arcane Astrolabes to trace Zana’s movements. Using an Astrolabe on a Map creates a Shaped Region affecting many maps in that Atlas quadrant. Clearing the Astrolabe’s content removes the influence and empowers the remaining maps in the region, ultimately granting access to one of four Memory Vaults for powerful rewards.
Voidstone and Progression Changes
The Voidstone system has been adjusted. The Decayed Voidstone now comes from defeating both the Shaper and the Elder (or Uber Elder). The Searing Exarch and Eater of Worlds each grant a Voidstone, and a new fourth Voidstone is obtained from the Incarnation of Dread. Each Voidstone now upgrades maps in its quadrant to a minimum of Tier 16 and provides a unique global bonus. Catch-up mechanics for Standard league players have also been streamlined.
Significant Atlas Passive Tree Adjustments
The Atlas Passive Tree has been heavily pruned and reshaped. Keystones like Shadow Shaping, Bold Undertakings, and Singular Focus have been removed. New keystones include The Paths Not Taken, which randomizes Divination Card drops, and Synthesised Stability. Many numerical values on existing notables have been increased, and the tree now features new clusters dedicated to the integrated Breach content.
New Skills, Items, and Balance Adjustments
Update 3.28.0 brings a suite of new skill gems, primarily with holy themes aligned with the Templar’s revised identity. Divine Blast, Holy Hammers, Holy Strike, and Shield of Light offer new Strength/Intelligence playstyles. The Templar now starts with Holy Strike and Hallow Support, reinforcing this archetype. Numerous Transfigured versions of existing skills have been added, such as Shockwave Totem of Authority and Kinetic Fusillade of Detonation.
Balance changes are extensive, affecting Ascendancies, unique items, and core mechanics. Key changes include the Guardian’s Sentinel of Radiance becoming a permanent minion, the Chieftain’s explode chance being doubled, and a major rework to the Lioneye’s Glare and Pledge of Hands uniques. Intelligence now grants 1% increased Maximum Energy Shield per 10 points, down from per 5.
Quality of Life and Interface Improvements
The update includes numerous player-requested improvements. Ritual Altars now provide a completion reminder, the Currency Exchange features favorite trades and better UI, and controller support has been enhanced for Atlas navigation and stash management. Crafting bench costs for previous exalted-orb recipes have been standardized, and the overall drop rate of currency items has been increased to make slaying monsters more rewarding.
The scale of the changes in Path of Exile’s 3.28.0 update is monumental, targeting both immediate league excitement and long-term health of the endgame ecosystem. By decoupling map items from fixed locations, Grinding Gear Games has dismantled a decade of accumulated friction, promising a more fluid and intentional endgame journey. The introduction of the league-specific Reliquarian and the Exceptional Gem system ensures fresh build discovery, while the integration and removal of past leagues demonstrate a continued commitment to curating a manageable, dense core game. This patch represents not just new content, but a philosophical shift towards player agency and streamlined progression in the Atlas.
