The sprawling fantasy world of Crimson Desert expands today with the release of its first major post-launch update. Patch 1.01, version 1.000.169, is now live across PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox platforms, delivering a substantial package of new content, quality-of-life enhancements, and critical bug fixes. The update, which rolled out on March 29, 2026, represents developer Pearl Abyss’s commitment to refining the ambitious open-world experience based on initial player feedback.
New Content and Gameplay Enhancements
At the heart of update 1.01 are five new summonable mounts, obtainable by fulfilling specific in-game conditions. These additions expand the roster of travel companions available to players exploring the continent of Pywel, offering new visual variety and potential gameplay benefits. To maintain the sense of discovery, the specific identities of these mounts remain shrouded in mystery, encouraging players to venture out and unlock them for themselves.
Beyond the new steeds, the patch introduces several systems aimed at streamlining the player experience. A new “Prepare Directly” function allows for instant cooking of known recipes without manually selecting ingredients. Inventory management receives a significant boost with a “Store All” button for personal storage depots, activated by a simple key combination or controller input. Furthermore, players can now acquire all knowledge for items currently on sale at shops in a single, three-second action, dramatically reducing menu time during trading sessions.
Refined Crafting and Exploration Mechanics
Crafting and resource gathering have been polished. Refinement Pieces are a new addition, allowing players to upgrade equipment to level 4 without consuming extra materials, obtainable as rewards from main story and faction quests. Material boxes have been scattered across Pywel, and gathering has been made more immediate: water drawn from wells now yields five units per action, and resources mined with the Fist Drill or cut with the Demeniss Chainsaw are collected instantly.
Exploration tools see adjustments as well. The detection range for treasures using the Pirate King’s Hat has been slightly increased. The functionality of the Knowledge Helmet has been improved to allow bulk acquisition of on-screen knowledge. Additionally, a new interaction button now appears before locked doors, giving players the explicit choice to use a key, preventing accidental consumption.
Overhauled Controls and Combat Fluidity
A primary focus of this update is improving the fundamental feel of movement and combat. Character and horse controls have been refined for greater fluidity. The sprint mechanic has been simplified: holding the sprint button now gradually increases the sprint level, and once at maximum speed, players no longer need to continuously hold the button to maintain pace, though periodic taps are required to execute the high-speed Dash action.
Revamped Aerial Movement and Combat Skills
The “Flight” skill has received significant attention, with reduced Stamina consumption, smoother activation, and the ability to use registered equipment while airborne. The “Aerial Pierce” skill has been completely redesigned. Previously exploitable through repeated aerial use, it has been rebalanced to offer a fun movement mechanic without breaking game balance. Its animation has been improved, and consecutive uses now incur progressively higher Stamina costs. Other aerial skills like “Aerial Maneuver” and “Aerial Sweep” also benefit from reduced Stamina drain.
Combat responsiveness is enhanced across the board. Player rotation during short-distance movement is more reactive. Visual effects now indicate enemy elemental weaknesses. Certain boss behaviors have been adjusted so they do not immediately attack after a player’s death and resurrection. A notable fix prevents the “Meteor Strike” skill from activating in mid-air when no reachable ground is present.
Keyboard and Mouse Quality-of-Life Improvements
PC players will notice several interface refinements. Inventory control has shifted from mouse-over to click-based selection: left-click to select, right-click or double-click to use. Selling an item in a shop can now be done with a double-click. A “Precision Controls” function has been added for Axiomatic Force manipulation, allowing finer object control by holding a key while moving the mouse.
Interface, Graphics, and Performance Optimizations
The user interface receives numerous tweaks for clarity and convenience. The mini-map can now be locked with North at the top. Icons for keys and anvils have been added to the map. The Quest Journal now displays icons for new quests, and the Codex UI has been overhauled for easier navigation of main and sub-categories. Notifications on the main screen have improved display times and fade-out moments.
Visual Fidelity and Platform-Specific Upgrades
Graphical stability and quality have been improved, particularly in low-resolution environments or when scaling is active. Rendering of transparent materials like hair, fur, and certain clothing is enhanced when FSR-RR or DLSS-RR is enabled. PlayStation 5 users gain a new “Fixed 4K Display” option, delivering a sharper image quality by rendering the screen in 4K resolution regardless of display support, using FSR scaling on base PS5 models in Performance mode.
On the technical side, DLSS-RR now correctly applies Displacement Mapping, and its preset has been shifted from D to E, improving overall quality and resolving issues with animated textures like waterfalls. A screen noise issue that could appear after extended play sessions has been corrected.
Significant Stability and Loading Improvements
Performance and stability have been optimized across all PC, Mac, and console platforms, addressing various crash issues. Loading times have been reduced when traveling via Abyssal Nexus points and when respawning after death. A specific frame rate drop during combat with the Crow Herald has been resolved, smoothing out those encounters.
Quest Fixes and Localization Refinements
Several progression-halting bugs in main story quests have been addressed. These include fixes for issues in the prologue quest “A New Journey,” Chapter 2’s “The Missing Companion,” and Chapter 3’s “Dance with the Devil.” Additional help information has been added to other quests where it was lacking. The patch also corrects an error where the quest objective UI would display item descriptions instead of quest content and includes widespread localization improvements and error corrections for all supported languages.
Companion, Crime System, and Miscellaneous Adjustments
Companion behavior has been tuned; familiars will no longer wander too far from the player during combat and can now properly pick up items in fight scenarios. The crime system sees a logical adjustment: Contribution Points will not decrease for a criminal act until an NPC actually witnesses it. Previously, a simple greeting could sometimes be considered a crime when the player had a low bounty, an error that has now been corrected.
A long list of other bugs has been squashed, ranging from cows not following correctly when herded, to tools not sheathing properly during equipment swaps via hotkeys, to overlapping UI elements. The update even adds sound effects for when certain animals eat meat, adding another layer of auditory detail to the world.
This comprehensive update follows the game’s substantial Day One patch, which added a new Chapter 3 tutorial and improved quest progression, game systems, skills, and boss balance. Patch 1.01 builds upon that foundation, directly tackling performance issues and control feedback reported by the community since launch. It demonstrates a clear path of iterative improvement for Crimson Desert, focusing on making the vast world of Pywel more responsive, stable, and enjoyable to navigate as players continue their adventures.
