AION 2 Clash Runes: The Fast +120 Gear Score Path

Skip the grind and boost your gear score by 120 instantly using Clash Runes from green quests in AION 2.

Green quests in AION 2 yield two Clash Runes for an instant +120 gear score.
Highlights
  • Equipping two Clash Runes from green quests gives you +120 gear score instantly at level 45.
  • Green quests supply only four Clash Runes total, so use them wisely.
  • The nightmare first clear offers a secondary source of Clash Runes for gear score.

Most AION 2 launch guides tell you to grind the same sealed dungeon over and over before you can continue the main story. That advice is backwards. Clash Runes are the single fastest gear score injection available at level 45 — and they require almost no combat at all.

In AION 2, Clash Runes are equipable runes that add roughly 60 gear score each in the global client, for 120 total when you fill both slots. The guaranteed pair comes from completing green side quests. That is the fastest +120 gear score you can get at endgame entry, and it pushes you from around 700 to 820 before you touch a single enhancement tab.

What Clash Runes Actually Do

Clash Runes occupy what the game treats as rune slots on your character, not gear slots. Equip them and your item level jumps immediately. Early access reports vary between 40 and 60 gear score per rune depending on which build you inspect, but the global client consistently lands at 60 per rune. Two runes, 120 gear score.

The value here is the slot efficiency. No other single item at that stage gives you 60 gear score per slot without demanding enhancement stones, mana stones, or dungeon clears. A green belt at +10 gives 23. A green amulet is similar. One Clash Rune is worth more than both of those combined, for zero upgrade cost.

The runes also respond to enhancement, and this is where the trap sits. More on that in a moment.

The Guaranteed +120 Route: Green Quests

The most reliable source is the quest journal. Open it, check the regional quest section, and look for the reward that lists a Clash Rune chest. Completing the green quest chain on your starting map yields that chest, which contains two runes. Equip both. You now sit around 820 gear score, depending on what else you have slotted.

The green quests also drop the bracelets and accessories you’ll wear for the next stretch, so do all of them, not just the rune quest. The same journal later unlocks additional regional quests as you complete sealed dungeons and side content. Check the journal periodically — the rune chest quest is not always visible from the start.

One warning: those runes are a finite resource at launch. The green quests supply only four Clash Runes total across all of them. Two go into your slots, leaving two spares. That matters more than most players realize.

The Backup Route: Nightmare First Clears

If you are short on time or already burned through some quests, the nightmare content offers a secondary path. Enter the nightmare at challenge level one and complete the first clear. The tokens you earn go to the trade shop under the growth tab, where you can buy Clash Rune chests directly.

First clears give the best token payout, so do each level once rather than farming the same one. Each level up the nightmare difficulty ladder gives another first-clear token bonus. This route takes longer than the quest chain, but it is fully repeatable across reset cycles, which makes it the only renewable source in the early game.

Why Enhancing Clash Runes Early Is a Mistake

Here is the position worth defending: keep every Clash Rune at +0 until you have a replacement in the bank. Do not gamble them.

The enhancement menu offers an 80% success chance when moving a Clash Rune from +1 to +2. On success, the rune gains roughly another 40 gear score. On failure, the rune is destroyed. Not downgraded — gone.

Four runes total exist in the launch quest content. You need two equipped. That leaves two spares. With an 80% per-attempt success chance, the odds of destroying both spares before reaching +2 on either one are far too real, and the moment you lose a rune, you surrender 60 gear score. That single loss vaporizes the progress the enhancement was supposed to create.

The math does not favor the gamble. A successful push gains 40 gear score. A failed push costs 60. Even at 80% success, the expected value of the first enhancement attempt is roughly 20 gear score, but that average hides the real outcome: you either gain 40 or lose 60, and the loss is not recoverable on the launch timetable. Replacement runes from nightmare require tokens that also buy Devaion crystals, enhancement stones, and other progression materials you need more.

Clash Rune Source Gear Score Gain Real-Time Cost Risk Level
Green quest chain (guaranteed chest) +120 for both runes 1–2 hours of questing on the starting map No risk, finite supply
Nightmare first clears + trade shop +120 per two chests purchased Multiple nightmare runs, token grinding No risk, slow token cap
Enhancement gamble on owned runes +40 per successful level-up Seconds per attempt 20% destruction chance, rune lost forever

The Counterargument: High Odds Mean You Should Push

The strongest objection goes like this: 80% success is good odds, and with two spare runes, the smart play is to attempt +2 on one of them. If it succeeds, you gain 40 gear score that helps reach the 1,000 threshold faster. If it fails, you still have one spare left.

That logic breaks against the actual progression gate. The reason you need gear score at that stage is binary: the final main story quest requires 1,000, and your immediate goal is crossing that line. A destroyed rune does not merely slow you down by 60 gear score — it widens the gap between you and the 1,000 gate, forcing you to compensate with materials better spent on gear enhancement or Devaion crystals. And the 80% number only holds for the first attempt. Higher levels carry worse odds, meaning the second spare often gets consumed chasing the same +40 you could have secured another way. In a game where every player starts week one short on materials, gambling the only guaranteed score source is a league of its own.

Keep the runes at +0. The 120 points are the entire point.

The Stretch from 820 to 1,000

With both Clash Runes equipped, you still have roughly 180 gear score to find before the main story gate opens. The fastest remaining sources in order of efficiency:

  • Devaion crystals from sealed dungeons. Each crystal grants one point on your Devaion boards, and the boards reward both gear score and combat power. This is the largest single chunk remaining.
  • Enhance your spirit-forged weapon and guard to +10. Those two pieces have a 100% success rate all the way up. Do not push past +10 yet; the failure stakes are not worth it.
  • Mana stones on every piece. Even white stones add gear score. Green rolls add more. Socket one per item and move on.
  • Morph your green belt and green amulet to blue. Unequip both, use substance morph, then re-equip. That jump alone is worth over 20 gear score per slot.

Do those in order and 1,000 comes quickly — usually by the time you finish the sealed dungeons and enhancement work. The MSQ bracelet you pick up after hitting 1,000 will then carry you for months, and it is worth enhancing to +10 immediately.

The One Time Enhancement Becomes Worth It

The advice above is launch-specific. On the Korean and Taiwan clients, later seasonal content makes Clash Runes far more abundant, and the enhancement gamble transforms from desperation into a reasonable endgame reroll tool. When you have ten runes in storage instead of two, pushing one toward +5 is acceptable.

Global players will not see that abundance for months. Until then, treat the +0 runes as fixed progress, not lottery tickets. Chasing 40 gear score at the cost of 60 is the kind of mistake that shows up an hour later when you are staring at the locked MSQ screen, realizing where the points went.
