CCP Games Rebrands as Fenris Creations After $120 Million Sale

CCP Games, the renowned studio behind the massively multiplayer online game Eve Online, has completed a significant corporate transition. The company, now operating independently as Fenris Creations, was sold back to its leadership by its former owner, Pearl Abyss, for $120 million. This transaction, consisting of $100 million in cash and $20 million in cryptocurrency, marks a strategic move for both entities. The company emphasizes that this transition is a change in ownership structure only, with its entire leadership team, development studios in Reykjavík, London, and Shanghai, and ongoing game development plans for Eve Online remaining completely intact. No restructuring or layoffs are planned as a result of the sale.

As Fenris Creations, the studio has announced a major new research partnership with Google DeepMind, a world leader in artificial intelligence research. As part of this collaboration, Google has also acquired a minority stake in Fenris Creations. The partnership is designed to be mutually beneficial, focusing on two primary fronts. For Google DeepMind, it provides a controlled, complex environment for AI research. The company will use an offline version of the vast, player-driven Eve Online universe on a local server to test and evaluate AI models in areas like long-horizon planning, memory, and continual learning. This allows for safe, contained experimentation within a dynamic and intricate system that mirrors many real-world complexities.

For Fenris Creations, this alliance is more than just a research venture; it represents a strategic pathway to innovation. The studio aims to leverage the insights from this AI research to explore and potentially create entirely new types of gameplay experiences within their existing and future game worlds. This aligns with the studio’s recent internal explorations into the use of AI tools for game development coding, highlighting a forward-thinking approach to technology. CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson framed the transition as a return to core principles, stating that direct ownership and independence allow the company to invest in virtual worlds designed to evolve over decades, continuing the long-term legacy established by Eve Online and its community.

From a historical perspective, this sale concludes a seven-and-a-half-year chapter for Pearl Abyss, the South Korean developer of Crimson Desert. Pearl Abyss originally acquired CCP Games in 2018 for a total potential value of $425 million, including a $225 million cash payment and $200 million in performance-related payouts. The company’s spokesperson cited significant shifts in the global gaming business environment and its own strategic priorities as the rationale for the divestment, noting that the recent selling price was determined objectively based on CCP Games’ current structure and market conditions. This move allows Pearl Abyss to reallocate resources while enabling Fenris Creations to operate with renewed autonomy under its original visionary leadership, supported by a powerful new partnership in AI research.
