The Elder Scrolls Online has ushered in its most transformative season to date with the launch of Update 49, known on consoles as patch 2.82. This major content drop, titled Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk, fundamentally reshapes both the game’s endgame activities and its core progression systems. Central to the update is the introduction of the Night Market, a challenging new event zone in Fargrave, and the debut of the Tamriel Tomes battle pass system, which replaces the longstanding Endeavors and Daily Login Reward systems.
The Night Market: A Dynamic and Dangerous New Arena
Launching on April 29, the Night Market represents a new tier of content for veteran adventurers. Described as a dynamic trade hub where Daedric and worldly goods exchange hands, this zone is far from a peaceful bazaar. Following the disappearance of its former leader, three rival patrons now vie for control, leaving districts overrun by malevolent forces. For the first time, mortals are invited into this formerly restricted area of Fargrave, tasked with choosing a faction to support in its power struggle.
Three Factions Vie for Dominance
Players must pledge allegiance to one of three distinct factions, each with its own philosophy and aesthetic. The Glittering Goad, led by the patron Tachien, is a ruthless meritocracy controlling auctions and market stands, operating on the belief that anyone can succeed—provided they pay for the privilege. The Ruckus, under Kharakhal Moon-Eye, seeks control through brute strength, offering “protection” to businesses while demanding cuts from all sold goods; their district is currently overrun with darkness and grief. The Thousand Eyes, led by Molto the Whisperer, is an ancient faction comprising the small and overlooked, gathering power through information and countless members working in subtle concert.
Activities, Encounters, and Substantial Rewards
The Night Market is designed as an Event Zone, featuring significantly increased difficulty compared to standard areas. Teamwork is encouraged to overcome challenges spread across three themed districts: the windswept Parch, the creature-infested Skittering Precinct, and the shadowy Sorrow’s Friend. Activities range from battling new bosses like Faceted and Calamitous creatures, participating in daring races through treacherous streets, solving puzzle-oriented Oddities, and engaging in new public-style Skirmishes.
The pinnacle of group content is The Opulent Ordeal, a new 12-player trial encounter that tests coordination and skill. Rewards for participation are extensive. Players earn Favor with their chosen faction to unlock vendor purchases and powerful, stackable Boons. A new home, the Night’s Den—a former bank vault—is earned via an introductory quest and features a direct entrance to the Night Market. The update adds 61 new achievements, including six titles like “Firebrand” and “Priceless,” three unique dyes, and collectibles such as the Egg of Arac memento.
Tamriel Tomes: A Complete Progression System Overhaul
Perhaps the most sweeping systemic change arrives with the Tamriel Tomes, which goes live on April 2. This new battle pass-style system is designed to reward consistent engagement with ESO’s content. A new Tome will launch every Season, lasting for its full duration, and features both a Free Track and a Premium Track. The Free Track offers cosmetics, the new Trade Bar currency, and gameplay items, while the Premium Track provides additional cosmetics and rewards as a permanent account unlock.
New Progression and Currency Economy
Progression is driven by a Challenge System featuring Weekly and Seasonal Challenges. Completing these earns Tome Points to unlock reward pages. A catch-up mechanic allows up to 12 Weekly Challenges to accumulate. The system introduces Trade Bars, a new currency that replaces Event Tickets (with a 1:100 automatic conversion) and is earned primarily from the Tamriel Tome, plus In-Game Events and Vengeance Campaigns. Crucially, Trade Bars are never sold for Crowns. This new currency is spent at the Gold Coast Bazaar, a new gameplay-driven store within the Crown Store UI launching March 25, where mounts, pets, and outfits previously tied to promotions can be purchased directly.
Combat Refresh: Dragonknight and Two-Handed Evolutions
Update 49 delivers a comprehensive combat refresh for the Dragonknight class and the Two-Handed skill line. These overhauls include enhanced visual effects, new animations, and updated audio to modernize the feel of gameplay. More importantly, the update reworks numerous abilities to improve their potency and usability in both PvE and PvP environments.
Key Dragonknight Changes
Across the Ardent Flame, Draconic Power, and Earthen Heart skill lines, abilities have been significantly tuned. Dragonknight Standard now provides a powerful group buff, increasing allies’ Weapon and Spell Damage by 300 and reducing damage taken by 10%. Lava Whip sees easier Empowered stack generation and a 40% damage increase. Searing Strike’s duration is extended to 10 seconds with a 100% boost to its damage-over-time. Fiery Breath now restores resources over time, and Inferno becomes an 8-meter radius wave with no target cap. Defensive and utility skills like Spiked Armor, Dragon Blood, and Chains of Flame have also received major buffs and new effects, such as applying Major Cowardice.
Two-Handed Skill Line Updates
The Two-Handed line receives quality-of-life improvements to key abilities. Berserker Strike duration is increased to 12 seconds, Uppercut cast time is reduced to 500ms, and Momentum now lasts for 30 seconds, reducing the maintenance required for this critical buff.
Player Experience: Sweeping Quality-of-Life Improvements
Beyond new content and combat changes, Update 49 introduces a vast array of player experience enhancements designed to reduce friction and respect player time. One of the most requested features, account-wide Outfit Slots, is now a reality, with a maximum of 10 slots (previously purchased slots are cumulative). Guild Reputation can now be displayed via a dropdown on the Character Screen without needing to wear a tabard.
Major System Streamlining
Several longstanding pain points have been directly addressed. Respecs for Skills and Attributes are now free directly from the UI, subject to a small cooldown. Crafting Research is 50% faster, with the maximum research time reduced from 30 to 10 days. Treasure Maps now stack up to 200 and are consumed automatically upon opening a chest. Bag and Bank upgrades see a 50% gold cost reduction, and 16 mounts previously available only for Crowns can now be purchased for gold.
ESO+ Perks Substantially Enhanced
The subscription service receives meaningful new benefits. ESO+ members now gain a +10% bonus to Tome Points from Challenges and receive a monthly Cache of Tome Points plus a Premium Tome Token. The Transmute Crystal cap is tripled from 1,000 to 3,000, and Antiquities lead timers are doubled for non-trivial leads. The Solstice DLC (both Western and Eastern) is now included in the ESO+ catalog.
New Item Sets and Endgame Gear
The update introduces powerful new gear options tied to the new content. Three new Monster Masks are aligned with the Night Market factions: the Thousand Eyes mask introduces a Shivved mechanic with damage transfer, the Glittering Goad mask creates a Frost Damage chain on bash or heavy attack, and The Ruckus mask provides Enraged stacking that grants Major buffs at maximum stacks. A new PvP set, Gorethief, introduces a Bloodthief stacking and bash consumption mechanic. A new antiquity, the Shattered Paths Signet, makes status effect damage scale with the player’s Ultimate.
Housing, Fixes, and the Road Ahead
Housing enthusiasts receive new homes, including the sunny Buccaneer Bay and the upgradable Night’s Den, plus 55 new furnishings. Countless fixes address issues across zones, quests, abilities, and UI. The PvP landscape is adjusted with a road speed bonus in Cyrodiil, expanded keep courtyards to prevent exploits, and the return of 3-Sided Battlegrounds for weekend events.
With the launch of Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk, The Elder Scrolls Online demonstrates a confident evolution, replacing outdated systems with more engaging long-term progression while delivering a challenging new zone that emphasizes faction choice and group play. The update’s sheer volume of quality-of-life changes signals a clear focus on smoothing the player journey, from early crafting to endgame trials. As the Tamriel Tomes system begins its cycle and adventurers first step into the chaotic Night Market, the foundation is laid for a year where player engagement is directly and rewarding tied to the ever-expanding world of Tamriel.
