ESO Season Zero Launches Night Market Zone and Replaces Endeavors with Tamriel Tomes Battle Pass

By Central

The Elder Scrolls Online has entered a transformative era with the release of Update 49 on consoles, corresponding to patch 2.82. This substantial overhaul, launching the inaugural Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk, fundamentally reworks core progression systems while introducing a challenging new endgame zone. The centerpiece is the Night Market, a dynamic event zone in Fargrave where players must navigate faction warfare, while the new Tamriel Tomes system replaces the longstanding Endeavors and Daily Login Rewards with a comprehensive battle pass model. Combined with extensive class refinements and sweeping quality-of-life improvements, this update represents one of the most significant shifts in ESO’s live-service strategy since its launch.

Night Market: A Daedric Power Struggle in Fargrave

Launching on April 29, the Night Market is not merely a new location but a new zone type designed for increased difficulty and coordinated play. Following the disappearance of its former leader, this once-restricted trade hub in Fargrave has fallen into chaos, with three rival patrons vying for control. Players are invited to choose a faction and participate in a persistent struggle for dominance, marking a departure from traditional, story-concluded zones to a living, conflict-driven arena.

The Three Factions Vying for Control

The faction dynamic introduces a new layer of player allegiance and reward pursuit. The Glittering Goad, under patron Tachien, represents a ruthless meritocracy built on wealth and exclusive auctions. The Ruckus, led by Kharakhal Moon-Eye, seeks control through brute strength and enforced “protection,” its district shrouded in darkness. In contrast, the Thousand Eyes, guided by Molto the Whisperer, is an ancient collective of the small and overlooked, gathering power through information and subtle influence. Player choice directly impacts the rewards they can earn and the narrative context of their activities within the zone.

Challenges and Rewards in the Themed Districts

The Night Market is divided into three distinct districts, each with its own environmental hazards and creature types. The Parch is a windswept arid landscape, the Skittering Precinct is overrun with crawling horrors, and Sorrow’s Friend is a foreboding realm of shadows. Activities are tiered for various group sizes and playstyles, ranging from solo-friendly Oddities puzzles and Daring Races to 4-player instanced bosses ruling each district. The pinnacle is The Opulent Ordeal, a 12-player trial that tests coordination and skill. Success earns players Favor with their chosen faction, unlocking vendor purchases, powerful stackable Boons, and even a new home—the Night’s Den, a former bank vault with a direct entrance to the market.

Substantial Achievement and Collectible Haul

The update adds 61 new achievements, including six prestigious titles like “Firebrand,” “The Scurrying,” and “Priceless,” each tied to faction favor. Three new dyes and multiple collectible Mementos, such as the Egg of Arac and the Windglass, are earned through specific challenges. Furthermore, twelve new Dragonknight Skill Styles become available for masters of the class, offering new visual flair for updated abilities.

Tamriel Tomes: A New Battle Pass Replaces Endeavors

Perhaps the most systemic change arriving on April 2 is the introduction of Tamriel Tomes, a seasonal battle pass that completely supersedes the Endeavors system and Daily Login Rewards. Each Tome lasts the duration of a season and features dual reward tracks. All players have access to a Free Track containing cosmetics, the new Trade Bar currency, and gameplay items. A Premium Track offers additional cosmetic rewards and, once purchased, is permanently unlocked for the account.

Progression Through Weekly and Seasonal Challenges

Progression is driven by a Challenge System. Players complete five Weekly Challenges, which can be rerolled, and larger, thematic Seasonal Challenges to earn Tome Points. A catch-up mechanic allows up to 12 uncompleted Weekly Challenges to accumulate. ESO Plus members receive significant benefits, including a 10% boost to Tome Point gains, a monthly Cache of Tome Points, and a Premium Tome Token. Collecting 12 of these tokens unlocks a Premium Tome with bonus rewards.

The Gold Coast Bazaar and Trade Bar Economy

Launching on March 25, the Gold Coast Bazaar is a new permanent storefront within the Crown Store UI. Crucially, it operates entirely on the new Trade Bar currency, which is earned through the Tamriel Tome, in-game events, and Vengeance Campaigns. All previous Event Tickets have been automatically converted at a rate of 1 Ticket to 100 Trade Bars. The Bazaar features a rotating Seasonal section and a permanent Gold Coast Wares selection, offering mounts, pets, outfits, and gameplay items that were previously tied to limited-time promotions or Endeavor vendors.

Major Combat Refreshes: Dragonknight and Two-Handed Overhauls

Update 49 delivers a comprehensive combat refresh for the Dragonknight class and the Two-Handed weapon skill line. These are not simple number adjustments but full visual, audio, and mechanical modernizations. Dragonknight abilities have received updated visual effects, animations, and sound design, with passive abilities now featuring immersive flavor text. Key changes include making Dragonknight Standard a potent group buff, increasing the damage and ease of use for Lava Whip and Searing Strike, and reworking Magma Armor into a more reliable defensive tool. A concurrent Skill Catch-Up Event is active to help players rapidly rank up these revised abilities.

Sweeping Quality-of-Life and Player Experience Improvements

The update addresses long-standing player requests with a suite of impactful changes. Outfit Slots are now account-wide, with a maximum of 10 slots available. Perhaps the most celebrated change is the removal of gold costs for respeccing skills and attributes directly from the UI, subject only to a small cooldown. Inventory management sees major upgrades: Treasure Maps now stack to 200, bag and bank upgrade gold costs are reduced by 50%, and upgrades can be purchased directly from the inventory screen.

Account and Progression Enhancements

Character progression has been significantly smoothed. Sixteen mounts previously available only for Crowns can now be purchased for gold, with existing gold mounts reduced to 25,000 gold. Crafting Research is now 50% faster, with the maximum research time reduced from 30 to 10 days. Vampire and Werewolf curses can be discovered at new shrines, with cure costs reduced. For ESO Plus members, the Transmute Crystal cap is tripled to 3,000, and Antiquities lead timers are dramatically extended, with Ultimate Leads lasting up to one year.

New Item Sets and PvP Adjustments

The update introduces powerful new gear tied to the Night Market factions. Three new Monster Masks—Thousand Eyes, Glittering Goad, and The Ruckus—each offer unique mechanics based on the factions’ themes. A new PvP set, Gorethief, introduces a bloodthief stacking and consumption mechanic. In Cyrodiil, a road speed bonus out of combat improves travel, keep courtyards have been expanded to prevent exploits, and campaign queueing has been streamlined. Battlegrounds see the return of 3-sided matches for weekend events and map adjustments to Huntsman Fortress and Remen’s Folly.

Expanded Base Game and ESO Plus Value

In a move to lower the barrier to entry, several major DLCs and systems are now part of the base game upon first login after the update. This includes the Warden class and the Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood chapters. For subscribers, ESO Plus now includes the Western and Eastern Solstice DLCs, further increasing the value of the membership.

From the faction-driven conflicts of the Night Market to the foundational shift toward a seasonal battle pass with Tamriel Tomes, ESO’s Update 49 reshapes the daily and long-term engagement loops for its player base. By removing friction points like respec costs and fragmented progression, while adding deep, challenging new content and meaningful choices, the game positions itself for a new chapter where player agency and rewarded participation are paramount. The success of Season Zero will likely chart the course for this evolved vision of Tamriel for years to come.
