The MSI MAG B850 Gaming Plus Max WiFi, a revision of the original non-Max model, embodies this change. While the “Max” suffix adds little beyond nomenclature, this ATX motherboard aims to blend performance with a distinct aesthetic. However, a deep examination reveals a product caught between its budget-oriented foundation and a mid-range price point, creating a compelling yet conflicted proposition for PC builders.

Unboxing and First Impressions: Familiar Territory

Opening the MSI MAG B850 Gaming Plus Max WiFi’s packaging is a familiar experience for anyone who has handled previous MSI offerings. The silver cardboard box, now adorned with the “Max” label, houses a standard accessory kit. Users receive a quick installation guide, a SATA cable, the proprietary EZ M.2 Clip II and its remover tool, a Wi-Fi antenna, a 1-to-2 EZ Conn-Cable for combining fan and ARGB headers, a front panel cable, and cable stickers. Notably absent are more premium inclusions like the multi-port EZ front panel connector found on costlier models, immediately signaling the board’s position in the hierarchy.

Design and Aesthetics: A Striking White Canvas

Its strengths are specific: a genuinely attractive white aesthetic perfect for themed builds, the inclusion of 5G LAN, and a suite of quality-of-life features like the EZ M.2 clips, PCIe release button, and external BCLK generator.

However, its weaknesses are fundamental to its value equation. The discrete power delivery, the single M.2 heatsink, the lack of high-speed USB, and the dated audio codec are concessions more expected on a sub-$200 board. When competitors from ASRock and MSI’s own lineup, like the B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi, offer more balanced feature sets or better power designs at similar or lower prices, this board’s rationale narrows considerably.

For builders prioritizing a crisp white aesthetic above all else and who will benefit from 5G LAN, this MSI offering has a clear appeal. Its quality-of-life touches are genuinely user-friendly. Yet, for the majority seeking the best overall package of features, performance, and thermals for their money, the market offers more compelling alternatives. The board is a competent performer wrapped in a beautiful shell, but its internal specifications tell a story of stunted value, making it a niche choice rather than a default recommendation.
