Elder Scrolls Online Launches Night Market Event Zone and Overhauls Progression with Season Zero Update

By Central

The landscape of Tamriel shifts dramatically as The Elder Scrolls Online deploys its foundational Season Zero update, introducing a permanent new event zone and fundamentally reworking core progression systems. Update 49, known as patch 2.82 on consoles, moves beyond traditional content drops to implement structural changes that will define the game’s future, headlined by the challenging Night Market in Fargrave and the new Tamriel Tome battle pass system replacing Endeavors.

Night Market: A Permanent, High-Stakes Event Zone

Launching on April 29, the Night Market establishes a new type of zone for ESO: a permanently available, high-difficulty area designed for coordinated group play. Following the disappearance of its former ruler, this once-restricted district of Fargrave has become a battleground where three rival factions vie for control, inviting mortal adventurers to choose a side. This marks a significant departure from temporary events, offering persistent endgame challenges.

The Factions Vying for Control

Players must pledge allegiance to one of three distinct patrons, each with a unique philosophy and hold over a themed district. The Glittering Goad, led by the meritocratic Tachien, controls auctions and market stands, operating on the principle that success is available to all who can pay. The Ruckus, under Kharakhal Moon-Eye, seeks control through brute strength, offering “protection” while demanding cuts from all goods. The Thousand Eyes, comprising the small and overlooked under Molto the Whisperer, gathers power through information and collective action.

Activities, Encounters, and Rewards

The zone is segmented into three themed districts—The Parch, Skittering Precinct, and Sorrow’s Friend—each overrun with different environmental hazards and creatures. Activities range from public skirmishes with dynamic goals to 4-player boss instances and a culminating 12-player trial called The Opulent Ordeal. Players earn Favor for their chosen faction, unlocking vendor purchases, powerful stackable Boons, and a new home, the Night’s Den, which features a direct entrance to the market. Completion rewards include 61 achievements, six new titles, three dyes, and collectible Mementos and furnishings.

Tamriel Tome Replaces Endeavors and Daily Login

In one of the most sweeping systemic changes, the Endeavors system and Daily Login Rewards have been removed entirely. Their functions are absorbed into the new Tamriel Tome, a seasonal battle pass-style progression system launching on April 2. Each Tome lasts an entire season and features both a Free Track and a purchasable Premium Track that permanently unlocks account-wide rewards.

Progression and the New Gold Coast Bazaar

Progression is driven by completing Weekly and Seasonal Challenges to earn Tome Points. A catch-up mechanic allows up to 12 Weekly Challenges to accumulate. The new currency, Trade Bars, replaces Event Tickets (converted at a 1:100 ratio) and is earned primarily through the Tome, in-game events, and Vengeance Campaigns. Trade Bars are spent at the new Gold Coast Bazaar, a permanent, gameplay-currency-driven store within the Crown Store UI that features rotating seasonal cosmetics and a permanent selection of mounts, pets, and outfits previously tied to promotions.

Major Combat Refinements for Dragonknights

Update 49 delivers a comprehensive combat refresh for the Dragonknight class and the Two-Handed skill line. These overhauls include enhanced visual effects, new animations, updated audio, and immersive flavor text for passives. Crucially, all existing character progression is automatically respected.

Key Ability Changes

The changes aim to modernize and balance the class. In the Ardent Flame line, Dragonknight Standard now buffs allies, Lava Whip deals significantly more damage with easier Empowered stacking, and Searing Strike’s duration and damage are increased. Draconic Power sees Spiked Armor’s duration doubled and Dragon Blood now scaling with Max Health. The Earthen Heart line introduces a new support shield ability, Superheated Ward, and reworks Magma Armor. Two-Handed abilities like Berserker Strike and Momentum also receive extended durations.

Substantial Quality of Life and Player Experience Upgrades

Beyond headline features, the update introduces a suite of improvements designed to reduce friction and enhance account-wide play. Outfit Slots are now account-wide, with a maximum of 10 slots. Perhaps the most celebrated change is the removal of gold costs for respeccing skills and attributes directly from the UI, subject to a small cooldown. Other notable upgrades include equal experience gain on both ability bars, a 50% reduction in bag and bank upgrade gold costs, and Treasure Maps that now stack up to 200.

ESO+ Perks and Base Game Expansion

ESO+ membership receives enhanced value. New seasonal benefits include a 10% bonus to Tome Points, plus monthly Caches of Tome Points and Premium Tome Tokens. Permanent perks see the Transmute Crystal cap tripled to 3,000, Antiquities lead timers doubled, and furnishing limits increased. Furthermore, the Solstice DLC (both Western and Eastern) is now included with the subscription. In a major move for new and returning players, several major DLCs—including the Warden Class, Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood—are granted for free upon first login after the update.

New Item Sets and PvP Adjustments

The update introduces new gear centered on the Night Market factions. Three new Monster Masks correspond to each patron: The Ruckus mask grants stacking enrage buffs, the Glittering Goad mask chains Frost Damage on bashes, and the Thousand Eyes mask features a damage-transfer “Shivved” mechanic. A new PvP set, Gorethief, introduces a Bloodthief stacking and consumption mechanic. In Cyrodiil, players now receive a movement speed bonus on roads while out of combat, and campaign queuing has been expanded.

Housing and Crafting Streamlined

Housing enthusiasts gain 55 new furnishings from various sources, including Master Writs, plans from Solstice coffers, and achievement rewards from the new factions. Two new homes are introduced: Buccaneer Bay, a sunny seaside retreat available later in the season, and the Night’s Den, earned through market activities. Crafting sees research times reduced by 50%, with the maximum research time lowered from 30 to 10 days. Sixteen mounts previously available only for Crowns can now be purchased with gold, with existing gold mounts reduced to a flat 25,000 gold.

With Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk, Zenimax Online Studios is not just adding content but recalibrating the core ESO experience. By integrating a permanent, faction-driven event zone, replacing dated progression systems with a modern battle pass, and implementing sweeping quality-of-life changes, the update lays a new foundation. It reflects a clear direction toward reducing grind, rewarding sustained engagement, and offering more challenging, coordinated endgame activities, setting the stage for the chapters and seasons to follow in this evolving world.
