Elder Scrolls Online Season Zero Launches With Night Market Event Zone and Tamriel Tomes Battle Pass System

By Central

The Elder Scrolls Online has entered a new era with the release of Update 49 on consoles, marked by the launch of Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk. This major content drop introduces the Night Market, a dynamic event zone in Fargrave where players must choose among three rival factions vying for control. Alongside this new zone, the update completely overhauls player progression with the Tamriel Tomes battle pass system, replaces the Endeavors system, and delivers extensive quality-of-life improvements including free skill respecs and account-wide outfit slots.

The Night Market: A New Type of Challenge Zone

Launching on April 29, the Night Market represents ESO’s first dedicated “Event Zone,” designed to offer significantly increased difficulty compared to standard areas. Following the mysterious disappearance of its former leader, this once-restricted district of Fargrave has become a battleground where three powerful patrons compete for dominance. Players must pledge allegiance to one faction and complete challenging activities to earn favor and unlock exclusive rewards.

Three Factions Compete for Control

The Night Market’s conflict centers around three distinct factions, each with its own philosophy and methods. The Glittering Goad, led by the meritocratic Tachien, controls auctions and market stands, operating on the principle that anyone can succeed—provided they can pay for the privilege. The Ruckus, under Kharakhal Moon-Eye, seeks control through brute strength, offering “protection” to businesses while demanding cuts from all goods sold. The Thousand Eyes, guided by Molto the Whisperer, comprises countless small and overlooked entities that gather power through information and collective action.

District Exploration and Dynamic Activities

The Night Market is divided into three thematically distinct districts, each presenting unique environmental challenges. The Parch features arid landscapes swept by dry winds, while the Skittering Precinct is overrun with crawling creatures nesting within the walls. Sorrow’s Friend serves as a dark, foreboding district home to shadow-lurking creatures. Throughout these areas, players will encounter new public-style skirmishes with dynamic goals, daring races through treacherous streets, puzzle-oriented oddities, and formidable bosses categorized as Faceted, Brazen, Argent, and Calamitous creatures.

Endgame Challenges and Substantial Rewards

For group content enthusiasts, the Night Market introduces 4-player boss instances featuring Gilded monsters that rule each district, along with The Opulent Ordeal—a challenging 12-player trial that tests coordination and skill at the culmination of the zone’s narrative. Successful completion of activities grants powerful stackable Boons and Favor with your chosen faction, which can be spent at faction vendors. Players can earn 61 new achievements, including six titles and three exclusive dyes, along with collectible Mementos like the Egg of Arac and Windglass, and numerous furnishings.

Tamriel Tomes Replaces Endeavors System

Perhaps the most significant systemic change arriving on April 2 is the introduction of Tamriel Tomes, a battle pass-style progression system that replaces both the Endeavors system and Daily Login Rewards. Each Season will feature a new Tome that lasts the entire duration, offering both Free and Premium reward tracks. The Free Track includes cosmetics, Seals, Trade Bars, and gameplay items, while the Premium Track offers additional cosmetics and rewards that unlock permanently for the account.

Progression Through Weekly and Seasonal Challenges

Progression through Tamriel Tomes is achieved by completing Weekly and Seasonal Challenges to earn Tome Points, which unlock reward pages. Each week, five Weekly Challenges refresh with reroll capability, while larger, thematic Seasonal Challenges remain constant throughout the season. A catch-up mechanic allows up to 12 Weekly Challenges to accumulate, ensuring players don’t fall permanently behind. ESO+ subscribers receive significant benefits, including +10% Tome Points from challenges and monthly caches containing Tome Points and Premium Tome Tokens.

Introduction of Trade Bars and Gold Coast Bazaar

The new Trade Bars currency replaces Event Tickets entirely, with automatic conversion at a rate of 1 Event Ticket to 100 Trade Bars. These bars are earned primarily through Tamriel Tomes, In-Game Events, and Vengeance Campaigns, and are never sold for Crowns. Accompanying this change is the Gold Coast Bazaar, a new gameplay currency-driven store accessible through the Crown Store UI. All items in the Bazaar are purchasable with Trade Bars and include mounts, pets, outfits, and gameplay items previously available through Golden Pursuits, Events, and promotions.

Major Quality-of-Life Improvements and Player Experience Updates

Update 49 delivers numerous long-requested quality-of-life improvements that fundamentally change how players interact with the game. Outfit Slots are now account-wide, with a maximum of 10 slots, and previously purchased slots are cumulative. Perhaps most notably, respeccing skills and attributes is now free through the UI, featuring only a small cooldown with some restrictions. Bag and bank upgrades have received a 50% gold cost reduction, with Crown costs also decreased, and upgrades are now available directly from the Inventory screen.

Character Progression and Accessibility Enhancements

Sixteen mounts previously available only through the Crown Store can now be purchased for gold, with existing mounts reduced to 25,000 gold. Stable training now allows three upgrades per session instead of one. Crafting research is 50% faster, with the maximum research time reduced from 30 to 10 days. Vampire and Werewolf players will find new discoverable shrines, reduced cure costs, and Crown Store cures now available for 0 Crowns. Treasure Maps now stack up to 200 and are consumed automatically when opening the corresponding chest.

ESO+ Perks Substantially Expanded

ESO+ membership now includes significantly enhanced benefits beyond the existing access to all DLC. The Transmute Crystal cap has tripled from 1,000 to 3,000 for subscribers. Antiquities lead timers are doubled for non-trivial leads, with Ultimate Leads lasting up to one year. Furnishing limits have increased across all homes, and both Western and Eastern Solstice DLC are now included with the subscription.

Combat Refresh: Dragonknight and Two-Handed Overhauls

Update 49 delivers comprehensive visual, audio, and mechanical updates to the Dragonknight class and Two-Handed skill line. Every ability has received enhanced visual effects, animations, and audio, with passive abilities now including immersive flavor text. Existing character progression is automatically respected, and a special Skill Catch-Up Event is currently active to help players faster rank progression on updated abilities.

Dragonknight Ability Rebalancing

Key changes to Dragonknight abilities include Dragonknight Standard now buffing allies with +300 Weapon/Spell Damage and -10% damage taken. Lava Whip features easier Empowered stack acquisition with +40% damage, while Searing Strike duration extends to 10 seconds with +100% DPS. Fiery Breath now restores resources over time, and Inferno becomes an 8-meter radius wave with no target cap. Defensive abilities like Spiked Armor and Dragon Blood have seen substantial improvements, with the latter now scaling with Max Health.

Two-Handed Skill Line Modernization

The Two-Handed skill line receives significant quality-of-life improvements with Berserker Strike duration increased to 12 seconds, Uppercut cast time reduced to 500ms, and Momentum duration extended to 30 seconds. These changes aim to make the weapon line more competitive and fluid in both PvE and PvP scenarios.

New Item Sets and PvP Updates

Update 49 introduces several new item sets that offer unique gameplay mechanics. The Shattered Paths Signet antiquity causes status effect damage to scale with Ultimate. Three new Monster Masks correspond to Night Market factions: Thousand Eyes features a Shivved mechanic with damage transfer, Glittering Goad creates a Frost Damage chain on bash/heavy attacks, and The Ruckus provides enraged stacking with Major buffs at maximum stacks. For PvP enthusiasts, the new Gorethief set introduces a Bloodthief stacking mechanic with bash consumption.

Cyrodiil and Battlegrounds Improvements

PvP receives substantial attention with multiple system improvements. Cyrodiil now features a Road Speed Bonus providing movement bonuses on roads while out of combat, and keep courtyards have expanded areas to prevent gatehouse exploits. Campaign queuing now enables cross-campaign participation, and leaderboards expand to 500 entries with class assignments removed. Battlegrounds see the return of 3-sided matches for Weekend Events, replacing the standard queue, along with map improvements to Huntsman Fortress and Remen’s Folly featuring elevated spawn points.

Housing Additions and Base Game Expansions

Housing enthusiasts receive two new homes: Buccaneer Bay, a notable sunny seaside retreat available later in the season, and Night’s Den, a former bank vault that can be upgraded through Night Market activities. Fifty-five new furnishings arrive from various sources, including 7 Master Writ furnishings from Rolis Hlaalu, 34 structural plans from Solstice Reward Coffers, and 25 achievement furnishings from faction vendors and mail rewards.

Major DLC Now Included in Base Game

Upon first login after Update 49, all players permanently receive several previously premium offerings: the Warden class, Imperial City, Orsinium, Thieves Guild, and Dark Brotherhood. This substantial expansion of the base game represents one of the most player-friendly moves in ESO’s history, dramatically lowering the barrier to entry for new and returning players.

The scale of Update 49 represents a foundational shift for The Elder Scrolls Online, moving beyond traditional chapter expansions to rework core progression systems and introduce new types of challenging content. By making respeccing free, expanding the base game, and creating more engaging long-term progression through Tamriel Tomes, ZeniMax Online Studios appears focused on reducing friction and rewarding player engagement. The Night Market’s faction conflict and dynamic events provide a template for future content, while the comprehensive quality-of-life changes address years of community feedback. As Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk unfolds, these systemic improvements create a stronger foundation for the game’s next decade, ensuring both veterans and newcomers have more reasons to explore Tamriel than ever before.
