Google’s AI shopping experiment lets you check out without leaving the chat

For all the hype around AI search, the payoff has mostly been faster answers instead of tabs full of blue links. Google’s next trick is to let you finish the purchase without leaving the conversation.

The company is testing the ability to buy products directly inside AI Mode, its AI-generated search format. As part of the experiment, people who see products from Google Shopping in an AI Mode result can add them to a Flipkart cart and complete the checkout right within the AI Mode window — no new tabs, no separate retail app required.

Google confirmed the test to The Verge. It’s rolling out now to English (US) users on Android, with the rollout limited to an early group of testers for now.

A conversation that ends in checkout

AI Mode already pulls products from Google Shopping and presents them as part of a synthesized answer to your query. Ask something like “find a waterproof backpack under $50 that fits a 16-inch laptop,” and the results assemble relevant products in a single view. What it couldn’t do until now was close the deal at the end of that conversation.

That’s the loop Google is now completing. Instead of sending you off to a retailer’s website to start a cart, the test lets you add those products to a Flipkart cart and pay without breaking out of the AI Mode session. The entire journey — from research to transaction — happens in one continuous experience.

Why buying inside the AI matters

Shopping is the classic money moment for search engines, which is exactly why Google wants to keep people inside its own walls. But the pressure is also competitive. OpenAI has been steadily adding commerce features to ChatGPT, including the ability to shop for products from Walmart within the chat interface. Read the tea leaves, and both companies are betting that the AI assistant becomes the future storefront — and neither wants to let the other own the transaction.

Finishing the purchase inside AI Mode also keeps Google in the middle of the money flow instead of reducing it to a referral source. Completing transactions inside the chat gives Google more insight into what works — and more room to sell shopping-friendly placement within the results.

Why Flipkart?

Google isn’t trying to build its own delivery network or payment rails. Instead, it’s tapping an existing retailer’s checkout flow to close the loop. That’s a sensible shortcut: Google controls the experience and the conversation, while the retailer handles fulfillment, payments, and logistics. It also suggests Google sees its role not as a marketplace or delivery service, but as the shopping layer that sits above them.

What’s next

This is still a test, and Google says it will learn from how people actually use it. Whether the feature becomes a permanent part of AI Mode will likely depend on whether users are comfortable racking up carts from within a chat — and whether retailers want to play ball.

The broader signal is clear: the new battleground for AI is not just answering questions, but completing the actions those answers trigger. If that future arrives, the last thing to disappear won’t be the library — it’ll be the checkout line.
